They confess first to their parents, expecting to be punished but knowing that their punishment would be penance for their sin. They do get punished, but instead of being horrible they find their punishment helps them to make up for the wrong they did. They also find out that being punished doesn’t mean that their parents don’t love them. Finally, they make their first reconciliation and experience the forgiveness and grace of Christ.This story is a wonderful, true-to-life parable of the power of the sacrament of reconciliation. The story of Maria and Riley could easily happen to any child, and their understanding of the sacrament slowly unfolds as layer upon layer of truth is revealed to them.
