Best friends Maria and Riley accidentally break a window then lie to their parents. Their growing discomfort coincides with encounters with their parish priests and teachers and lessons of forgiveness, love and reconciliation. Includes a "Guide to the Sacrament of Reconciliation" and memory book section. ; Maria and Riley have a problem. They broke a window in Maria’s house with a soccer ball. Even worse, they lied to their parents about it. In their religion classes, Maria and Riley are learning about sin and forgiveness as they prepare to receive the sacrament of reconciliation for the first time. When Father Hugo and Ms. Kelly teach them about sin, Maria and Riley know that they have offended God as well as the love of their parents. However, they still cannot bring themselves to tell their parents what they had done. Their sin continues to bother them, even making Maria a little sick. However, as their lessons continue they learn about the meaning of reconciliation, penance, and atonement. They learn of God’s unconditional love for them, and in the power of grace to get rid of sin. They also learn about their own participation in their salvation by confessing their sins and doing penance. Finally, they come to the point that they are ready to admit their wrong doing. They confess first to their parents, expecting to be punished but knowing that their punishment would be penance for their sin. They do get punished, but instead of being horrible they find their punishment helps them to make up for the wrong they did. They also find out that being punished doesn’t mean that their parents don’t love them. Finally, they make their first reconciliation and experience the forgiveness and grace of Christ. This story is a wonderful, true-to-life parable of the power of the sacrament of reconciliation. The story of Maria and Riley could easily happen to any child, and their understanding of the sacrament slowly unfolds as layer upon layer of truth is revealed to them. In addition to the story, Today I Made My First Reconciliation also includes a guide to the sacrament, which has in it a description of the reconciliation room, the Ten Commandments, an examination of conscience, important prayers related to the sacrament, scriptural reference about sin and the institution of reconciliation, and finally how to go to confession. At the end of the book is a place for children to record memories about their religion class, their first reconciliation, and the most important truths taught by the Bible and the Church about sin and forgiveness. The addition of the memory pages makes this book a beautiful keepsake as well as a great preparation for First Reconciliation.; 56 pages
