This is the story of Bernadette Soubirous, the woman who received the visions of Our Lady at Fatima, after the apparitions. The movie by Jean Delannoy tells of the life that made Bernadette a saint.; DVD; I found The Passion of Bernadette to be much like the movie Terese. It is an uplifting movie for those who already have a love for Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes. However, it probably will not be enjoyed so much by those without such devotions. The movie shows a well-rounded portrayal of Bernadette as a young woman who desired with her whole heart to go to heaven and to please Mary and Jesus but who struggled with pride and impatience (even commenting at one point, "These petty bishops. I wish they would just go home"). The movie is fairly well acted, though certainly not up to Hollywood professional standards. It certainly did not drag. The only real negative criticism I had was that, like Terese, it left certain scenes unexplained, perhaps assuming that the devoted viewer already knew the story. For example, on her death bed (supposedly after much spiritual growth), Bernadette says about her doctor, "I do not wish to see that one ever again." All told, this is a realistic, pious movie about a woman chosen by God and struggling to live up to the Call.
